Major Chords Inversions

In this lesson, you are going to learn major chord inversions. In the chord inversions lesson, you learned that every three note chord can be played in three different positions. These positions are the root position, the first inversion, and the second inversion. Now take a look at an exercise you can do with chord inversions to help us become more familiar with them. You will be using the C major chord in this example. Let's take a look at an animation of this exercise.

Seven steps to play the C Major Chord Inversions
steps for this exercise use both hands. You can also practice this exercise one hand at a time. Let's go through the steps for this exercise.

Step 1: Play the C major chord in root position with both hands. So both hands will play C, E, G.

Step 2: Move both hands up the piano keyboard and play the C major chord in first inversion. So both hands will play E, G, C.

Step 3: Move both hands up the piano keyboard again and play the C major chord in second inversion. So both hands will play G, C, E.

Step 4: You will now return to the C major chord in root position, one octave higher from where we started from. Move both hands up the piano keyboard and play the C major chord in root position. So both hands will play C, E, G. Now it's time to move backwards to return to our starting position.

Step 5: Move both hands down the piano keyboard and play the C major chord in second inversion. So both hands will play G, C, E.

Step 6: Move both hands down the piano keyboard and play the C major chord in first inversion. So both hands will play E, G, C. In the next step, you will be returning to our starting position at the beginning of this exercise.
